Councillor Gibson was first elected as an SNP representative for the Saltcoats and Stevenston ward in 2007. He served as Leader of North Ayrshire Council from May 2012 until August 2016 when there was a change in Administration.
Since joining the Council, Councillor Gibson has been involved in a variety of Council and external bodies, having formerly been Chair of the North Ayrshire Licensing Committee, Economic Development & Regeneration Strategy Board, Irvine Bay Urban Regeneration Company and a member of the COSLA Education, Children and Young People Executive Group.
Councillor Gibson currently sits on the Appeals Committee, Staffing and Recruitment Committee, the Local Development Plan Committee and the Ayrshire Shared Services Joint Committee, along with the Three Towns Locality Partnership. He is also a non-executive member of NHS Ayrshire and Arran Health Board.
Councillor Gibson taught mathematics at a number of secondary schools and was Depute Head Teacher at Auchenharvie Academy in Stevenston for eight years.
Born and raised in North Ayrshire, Councillor Gibson attended Ardrossan Academy. He is married with four children and has a wide range of sporting interests, particularly rugby and golf.
