Councillor Robert Steel was elected as an Independent representative for Kilwinning at the May 2012 local government elections.
Councillor Steel is the Chair of the Kilwinning Locality Partnership. He also sits on the Planning Committee & Local Review Body, the Local Development Plan Committee, the Licensing Committee & Board, the Integrated Joint Board, the Communities & Lifelong Learning Advisory Panel, the 1st Tier JCC and the Corporate Health & Safety Group. He also represents the Council on the West of Scotland Road Safety Forum, North Ayrshire Sports Association for the Disabled, North Ayrshire Community Planning Partnership Board and the North Ayrshire Carer’s Strategy Advisory Group. Councillor Steel has also been appointed North Ayrshire Council’s Carers Champion.
Councillor Steel’s career included being part of the Management Team at National Semiconductor (UK) Ltd where he was the Environmental, Health and Safety Manager for the Company. Before that Councillor Steel held various positions in a 25 year career at ICI Nobels, including Analytical Chemist, Production Manager and Occupational Hygiene Manager, covering operations throughout the UK. Occupational hygiene is the science of recognising, evaluating and controlling chemical and physical hazards in the workplace.
Born and raised in Kilwinning, Councillor Steel attended Kilwinning High School and is married with two children, three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. His range of interests include walking, cycling, travelling, reading and participating in activities with his grandchildren.
