Biography
Councillor Peter McNamara was first elected as a Labour Councillor to Cunninghame District Council in 1988 and now represents the Ardrossan and Arran Ward. Following the May 2012 local government election he was appointed Leader of the Opposition.
Councillor McNamara has previously held positions such as Vice Chair of Finance and Vice Chair of Property and Commercial Services, along with Chair of Education and during the previous Administration he was elected to the Executive of North Ayrshire Council. Councillor McNamara has also held the position of Chair of YouthLink Scotland and has since received a lifetime achievement award from them.
Following a change to the Administration in August 2016, Councillor McNamara was appointed Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care.
He is currently the Chair of the Integration Joint Board and the Three Towns Locality Partnership. He sits on the Local Development Plan Committee along with the Communities and Lifelong Learning Advisory Panel as well as being a substitute member of the Appeals Committee and Staffing & Recruitment Committee and Police Fire and Rescue Committee.
Councillor McNamara also sits on numerous outside bodies including Chairing the South West Scotland Community Justice Authority, the Ayrshire Criminal Justice Joint Committee, Brodick Country Park Joint Committee, COSLA Health and Wellbeing Executive Group and COSLA Community Justice Sub Group, the NAHSCP Integrated Joint Board, as well as Safer North Ayrshire Community Planning Partnership Board.
Born in Liverpool, Councillor McNamara worked as an electrician before moving on to work for the General Post Office, which then became British Telecom. He is married with one daughter and two grandchildren.
