The by election was triggered by the resignation of one of the ward Councillors. The by election took place on 25 August 2011 and was conducted under the single transferable voting system. This was also the first by election counted in North Ayrshire using e-counting equipment.

Tournout was 25.42%.  Jim Montgomerie was returned as the Councillor.
