The Electoral Registration Officer

The Electoral Registration Officer (for Ayrshire) is an official appointed by North Ayrshire Council, East Ayrshire Council and South Ayrshire Council and is responsible for maintaining the Register of Electors.

All enquiries about registering to vote, including voting by post or by proxy, must be directed to the Electoral Registration Officer (for Ayrshire) and not the Council.  The Electoral Registration Officer can be contacted at 9 Wellington Square, Ayr, KA7 1HL.

How to register to vote

To vote in an Election or Referendum, you must be on the Electoral Register.  Eligibility criteria will apply to each type of election but if you are not registered, you will be unable to vote.

Since 19 September 2014, each person is now required to vote individually, rather than by household and provide personal identifiers such as date of birth and National Insurance Number. 

Online

You can register online.
 

Telephone

You can contact the Electoral Registration Officer on (01292) 612221 to complete your registration by telephone or to request a registration form.
 

Who can register?

You must be aged 16 or over (or 14 or over in Scotland and Wales).

You must also be one of the following:

  • a British citizen
  • an Irish or EU citizen living in the UK
  • a Commonwealth citizen who has permission to enter or stay in the UK, or who does not need permission
  • a citizen of another country living in Scotland or Wales who has permission to enter or stay in the UK, or who does not need permission

Postal voting

If voting in person at your local polling station is not convenient for you, you can choose to vote by post.  You can apply for a postal vote by downloading the postal vote application form from the Electoral Commission's I am a Voter page and returning it to the Electoral Registration Officer, 9 Wellington Square, Ayr, KA7 1HL   Email:  ero@ayrshire-vjb.gov.uk 
 

Proxy voting

Proxy voting means that if you aren’t able to cast your vote in person, you can have someone you trust cast your vote for you.

You can apply for a proxy vote by visiting the Electoral Commission's I am a Voter page and downloading the appropriate form and returning it to the Electoral Registration Officer, 9 Wellington Square, Ayr, KA7 1HL   Email:  ero@ayrshire-vjb.gov.uk
