The Council comprises 12 SNP Group Members, 11 Labour Group Members (comprising 7 Labour and 3 Labour and Co-operative Members), 9 Conservative and Unionist Group Members and 2 Independent Members.
The Council operates a minority SNP Administration, with a main and second opposition. Each is led by a political Group Leader and Depute.
The Leader and Depute Leader of the Council are Councillors Marie Burns and Councillor Shaun Macaulay, respectively. Councillor Anthea Dickson and Councillor John Sweeney are the Provost and Depute Provost, respectively. The Provost, or in her absence, the Depute Provost, will chair meetings of the Council. The full Council is expected to meet in the eighth week of every committee meeting cycle (excluding recess periods). Meetings of the Council are normally held in the Council Chambers located at Cunninghame House in Irvine, but meetings may take place on a remote or hybrid basis from time to time.
